2021 Jeep Renegade Gets Hybridized

The next year will be particularly interesting for this crossover, as we are about to see some pretty interesting novelties. The current, original generation of this subcompact SUV has been around for about five years. Despite that we’ve already seen a facelift, there are more novelties to come before the end of the production cycle. The biggest one, by far, will be the introduction of the new 2021 Jeep Renegade PHEV version. It has been presented last year and now it’s getting ready for the production.

The current model is strong in many fields, particularly in terms of off-road performances and an intuitive infotainment system. However, many rivals are more versatile and one of Renegade’s drawbacks is below-average fuel economy. That’s why the new plug-in hybrid version is a big deal. It will significantly improve this SUV in terms of efficiency. Most details about the new setup are already known and it looks like there won’t be too many other novelties to see, other than a new powertrain. We expect to see this version sometime in the second half of the year.

Without any doubt, this is the biggest novelty for the next year. The 2021 Jeep Renegade plug-in hybrid is coming with a new setup, the same one that will be used for the new Compass. The whole system is based on a well-known 1.3-liter turbo-four engine that puts out around 177 horsepower. This engine will be backed up with a quite powerful electric motor that delivers around 134 horses and delivers all of them to rear wheels. The combined output will go around 240 horsepower, which should be more than enough to move this crossover from zero to sixty in about 7 seconds.

Besides strong performances, we expect pretty high efficiency. The exact numbers are still to come. Still, we know that the battery will be large enough to provide up to  31 miles of the all-electric range. The top speed in this mode will go around 80 miles per hour.

Engine

Other than the powertrain, the new Jeep Renegade 2021 won’t feature bigger changes under the hood. We will see two familiar engine options in the offer. Base versions will be equipped with a well-known 2.4-liter four-cylinder unit that puts out around 180 horsepower. There is also an option 1.3-liter turbo-four, good for 177 horsepower, as we already mentioned. While the outputs are pretty much at the same level, the options turbo-four offers notably better fuel economy, which goes up to 24 mpg in the city and 32 mpg on the highway. On the other side, the base unit is good for about 22 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway. Both engines come in pair with a 9-speed automatic transmission.

We won’t see the 2021 Jeep Renegade redesign, but the next year will be interesting anyway. As we already mentioned, there is a completely new PHEV model on the way. It will certainly feature a couple of exclusive details. On the other side, the rest of the lineup is expected to keep things the same, which is no surprise given the last-year facelift. For that occasion, we saw a new bumper, bigger grille and LED headlights, along with a few more changes. Of course, you may also count on the 2021 Jeep Renegade Trailhawk, which comes with various off-road upgrades, both in terms of mechanics and aesthetics.

The interior layout will also remain the same. That means you may count on a pretty nice-looking dashboard which, despite some hard plastics, looks pretty good. The rest of the cabin is well-built as well. We particularly like that excellent infotainment system, which is among the bests in the business.

Features

Novelties in terms of standard equipment are always expected, but we are pretty sure there won’t be many of them. So, the list of standard features should remain quite similar to the current model. In terms of tech goodies, this means that base models will come standard with things like a 5-inch touchscreen, voice control, Bluetooth, a USB port, six speakers etc. In higher trims, you can get a 7- or 8.4-inch touchscreen, as well as goodies like a nine-speaker premium audio system, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, navigation, HD Radio, and satellite radio.

When it comes to safety features, a rearview camera is the only standard feature, but there is plenty to get in higher trims. You can get things like blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, front and rear parking sensors and many more.

2021 Jeep Renegade Release Date and Price

The 2021 Jeep Renegade release date should happen sometime in the second half of the year. We still don’t know the price of the new PHEV version, while base gasoline models should go around 22.500 dollars.
