2021 Toyota Land Cruiser Review: Still Very Capable

The iconic SUV that has brought Toyota to North America is having a relatively hard time these days, mostly because of the fact that it hasn’t been redesigned for 13 years, which is literally an eternity by today’s standards. However, the current generation still has a lot of great things to offer. That’s probably the reason why the company doesn’t rush with the overhaul. The 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser is coming without bigger changes and many believe that the reason lays in the fact that a completely new, next-generation model could arrive already a year later.

This means that you may count on familiar design characteristics for the next year. This is one of the most capable SUVs on the market, famous for its off-road performances, durability and reliability. It is also very luxurious, but very pricey as well. The engine is powerful but thirsty as well. All in all, this model doesn’t need any particular introduction, especially to those who have already shortlisted this legendary machine.

2021 Toyota Land Cruiser Design

As we’ve just mentioned, the next year won’t bring any particular difference. We are about to see a familiar layout, which has been visually updated for a couple of times so far. However, the model still rides on the same chassis from 13 years ago. Of course, we are talking about a genuine body-on-frame SUV, which offers incredible off-road performances. The list of standard features includes a lot of off-road goodies, while the ground clearance ensures great approach, departure and break-over angles.

Visually, the model has been updated a few years ago. It received new headlights and a couple more tweaks, but it still features that unmistakable Land Cruiser appearance. For the next year, the only visual updates we are about to see are new color options in the Heritage Edition model – Classic Silver and Magnetic Gray.

Interior

The 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser redesign won’t happen, so you may count on the same interior layout. This SUV features a really luxurious cabin. Despite the age, it still looks really amazing. The secret lays in a combination of high-quality materials and excellent build quality, which come in a pretty classic design.

When it comes to comfort and passenger space, the first two rows are pretty good, even compared to much younger competitors. On the other side, the third row is really tight for this class and should be left for kids.

Another drawback of this model is the cargo area. You may count on about 16.1 cubic feet of cargo space behind its third-row seats, 41.4 cubic feet with these seats folded, and 82.8 cubic feet with the second and third rows folded. Also, the third row folds to the side, instead of folding down, which isn’t particularly practical.

Features

The 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser price remains pretty much the same as for the previous year model and one of the main reasons is the fact the list of standard and available features hasn’t changed at all. This model comes fully loaded with all kinds of features, though some of them (read infotainment system) seem pretty outdated. So, the list of standard features includes a 9-inch touch screen, a navigation system, Bluetooth, a USB port, HD Radio, satellite radio, 14 speakers, and a smartphone charging pad. You may also count on a lot of comfort and convenience features, such as four-zone automatic climate control, keyless entry, push-button start, a power liftgate, a moonroof, and a 120-volt outlet. Logically, the list of options isn’t particularly long and includes just marginal upgrades like a rear-seat entertainment system with two 11.6-inch displays, a DVD player, and two headphones.

2021 Toyota Land Cruiser Powertrain

The 2021 Toyota Land Cruiser carries on with a well-known 5.7-liter V8, which is good for about 381 horsepower and 401 pound-feet of torque. The engine offers a confident ride, while the 8-speed automatic does a really amazing job. On the other side, the fuel economy is pretty bad. It goes just around 13 mpg in the city and 17 mpg on the highway.

When it comes to off-roading, that’s where this SUV is on its own. It comes with features like all-terrain tires, tow hooks, multiple skid plates, low-speed crawl control, a two-speed transfer case with high- and low-range gearing, a locking center differential and Toyota’s Kinetic Dynamic Suspension System, which disconnects sway bars when needed. So, it’s no wonder that this SUV can deal with pretty much anything off the road.
