The current generation of Ford’s mid-size crossover has been around for more than six years. However, it still makes pretty good sales results and it is among the most popular mid-size SUVs on the market, especially when it comes to five-seaters. Therefore, it’s no wonder that the Blue Oval company doesn’t rush with changes. The development of the new model starter a while ago, but everything is happening at a quite steady pace. So, the new model will eventually come in the next year, as the 2022 Ford Edge.
At this point, we still don’t know much about the next-generation model. Still, we know for sure it will get a new platform, as well as improvements in all aspects. It probably won’t get much bigger but it will come with more powerful engines and better driving characteristics. Of course, we also count on a completely new cabin, which will look far better than the current one.
2022 Ford Edge Redesign
Like any other redesign, this one will also bring lots of changes and novelties. At this point, there isn’t much to tell but we know for sure that the 2022 Ford Edge will switch to a new platform. Of course, we are talking about the company’s latest CD6 architecture, which already underprints the new Explorer and will be used for the next-generation Mustang.
This architecture will bring one critical change and that refers to the overall layout. While the current model is a front-wheel-drive car, the new model will feature an RWD layout. Of course, AWD models will be in the offer too. That should have a significant impact on handling and overall driving experience. So, we expect that the new 2022 Ford Edge will be much more interesting to drive, considering that the current model isn’t particularly great in this aspect.
Exterior
When it comes to the exterior design, one of the first things that come to mind is the size. From what we know so far, the new model should keep similar dimensions. The overall shape will definitely remain the same, while we don’t expect a significantly longer wheelbase either. To remind you, the current model measures around 112 inches in wheelbase, which is quite typical for the class.
When it comes to the styling, we expect that the Blue Oval company will implement its latest design language. This would mean rather evolutionary changes, just like was the case with the new explorer. The front end should come in a similar manner, which includes rather sharp headlights and a bigger grille. Of course, other parts will also be designed in a more aggressive manner. The upgrade ST model is also expected and it should bring all kinds of visual upgrades.
Interior
Once again, you should look at Ford’s newer models if you wonder how the new cabin of 2022 Ford Edge will look like. Naturally, cabins of the new Explorer and Escape are the first that come to mind and we have no doubt that the Edge will feature a similar dashboard design. It is a typical Ford approach, which means a relatively attractive styling, but more focus on functionality. We particularly like the fact that Ford still keeps most control physical, though a tablet-like touchscreen looks quite nice as well.
When it comes to the interior space, we already mentioned that the new model won’t be much bigger than the outgoing generation. Therefore, we count on a similar amount of interior space, which is pretty generous in both rows, so the Edge accommodates five adults with ease. Furthermore, the cargo area also offers some pretty respectable numbers, so the new 2022 Ford Edge should continue in the same way.
2022 Ford Edge Engines
We count on big changes under the hood. Most like, both of the current engine options will be replaced. The base 2.0-liter unit will probably be replaced with a bigger and more powerful 2.3-liter engine, which would feature a max output of around 300 horsepower.
Of course, we count on the ST model as well. In this case, we expect that the well-known 2.7-liter engine would be replaced with a new 3.0-liter V6. The new engine already debuted in Explorer and it delivers pretty respectable performances, which is no wonder, considering that the max output goes around 400 horsepower.
We presume that the new 2022 Ford Edge will come with some sort of electrified powertrain in the offer as well. A 318-hp hybrid, which is based on a good-old 3.3-liter V6, seems quite possible. Some sources also suggest the possibility of a PHEV version.
2022 Ford Edge Release Date and Price
Although the exact launch date is yet to be announced, we expect that the 2022 Ford Edge will hit the market sometime in 2022. The current model starts at around 32.000 dollars and we don’t expect that the next generation will cost much higher. Key competitors are models like Honda Passport, Hyundai Santa Fe etc.
