2022 Hyundai Santa Fe Gets Plug-In Hybrid Powertrain This Summer

As you probably know, the popular mid-size crossover came significantly updated last year, only two years after the launch of the current generation. This update included changes in pretty much every aspect, starting from the styling, interior design, powertrain, etc. However, that doesn’t mean that the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe will be a typical carryover. Instead, it will come with another big novelty, with a plug-in hybrid powertrain. Other than that, things are about to remain the same.

This means that, despite the novelties, you may count on familiar design characteristics. This SUV offers a lot of great things, starting from a pretty unique look in the class, several engine options, a luxurious cabin, and a relaxed drive. The best thing is that all this comes at a really affordable price. Of course, there are also few things we don’t like, such as tight rear headroom, small cargo area, and a little bit of thirsty gasoline engines.

2022 Hyundai Santa Fe Gets Plug-In Hybrid Powertrain

Without any doubt, this will be the biggest novelty for the next year. We’ve already seen the premiere of the standard hybrid model and not it’s time for the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe Plug-In Hybrid. Allegedly, this version will hit the market already in summer.

When it comes to base characteristics, the same 1.6-liter turbo-four will serve as the basis. However, we are about to see a more powerful, 90-hp electric motor installed. The combined output will go around 260 horsepower, which is a number that promises respectable performances. Also, a 12.4-kWh battery will be enough to provide around 30 miles of the all-electric range. When it comes to fuel economy, the company claims around 33 mpg combined.

Other Powertrain Options

Other than the new PHEV, the powertrain lineup will remain the same. This would mean three more variants in the offer. The standard engine is a well-known 2.5-liter four-cylinder unit, which puts out around 191 horsepower. That’s not too much, but should be enough for those who are looking for a daily commuter.

The next unit on offer is a turbocharged version of this engine. Of course, it offers way better driving dynamics, which is no wonder considering the max output of 277 horsepower. Still, keep in mind that this unit is slightly thirstier in the city, where it returns around 22 miles per gallon. On the other side, the highway economy also goes around 28 mpg.

Finally, there is a hybrid version. It is based on a 1.6-liter turbo-four engine that puts out around 177 horsepower. In addition, it gets help from a 60-hp electric motor, so the total output goes around 225 horsepower. Also, you may count on about 34 mpg combined.

If we consider all the things that have been updated recently, it’s pretty much a certain thing that the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe won’t feature any bigger update in terms of styling and mechanics. Visually, the last year’s refresh was massive. It included loads of styling changes, particularly at the front. There, we can see a completely new front end, which includes new headlights, a new grille with a futuristic 3D pattern, a new bumper, and many more things. So, we are pretty sure that the new 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe color options are the best thing we could possibly see in the next year.

The same thing goes for mechanics. The chassis and suspension setup will certainly remain the same. That’s not a bad thing at all, considering that this crossover drives smooth and offers a high level of comfort in general. On the other side, steering could be better and we believe that more ambitious drivers should rather consider some other models of a similar size.

Interior

The 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe interior will also continue in the same way. Once again, we are talking about big updates that happened in the last year. The new cabin looks way more upscale, mostly because of a completely new center console, which is more massive and comes with finer materials and new controls. The rest of the cabin also utilizes fine materials, while a new touchscreen is bigger compared to the pre-facelifted version. Another piece of a luxury touch is a digital instrument cluster.

The amount of passenger space is good in both rows, particularly in terms of legroom. On the other side, taller passengers might struggle with headroom in the second row. Unlike previous generations, the current model also offers a pretty decent amount of cargo space, which goes around 35.9 cubic feet behind the second row and 71.3 cubic feet with the rear seats folded.

2022 Hyundai Santa Fe Release Date and Price

When it comes to the 2022 Hyundai Santa Fe release date, the new PHEV version will arrive in the summer. On the other side, the rest of the lineup will probably hit the market later in the year. When it comes to the price, base models should go around 28.000 dollars, while the new plug-in hybrid will probably start at around 35.000 dollars. Some of the key competitors are models like Ford Edge and Honda Passport.
