These days, we can read many reports that talk about Mazda’s plans for the future. A whole new generation of more upscale models is on the way to challenge German premium brands. This includes the new CX-50, which will be a new premium crossover. However, that won’t happen before 2023, so the 2022 Mazda CX-5 will carry on pretty much in the same way.
This means you may count on a model that is considered one of the best compact SUVs around. It offers a class-leading driving experience thanks to impressive handling and good engine options. Furthermore, it features an elegant exterior and the best-looking cabin in the class. Add to this an impressive list of standard and available equipment, as well as perfect safety ratings, and the CX-5 becomes an obvious choice for all those who are looking for a compact crossover. However, you will have to sacrifice practicality, as the cargo area is among the smallest in the class. We expect to see the 2022 Mazda CX-5 sometime late in the year.
2022 Mazda CX-5 Design
Mazda makes gorgeous cars and the CX-5 is no exception. The current generation has been around since 2017, so it’s no wonder it’s aligned with most of the models in the lineup. It still looks incredibly fresh, thanks to sleek lines and classic design solutions. Of course, we are talking about, now already legendary, KODO design languages, which provided us with some super gorgeous models in the last couple of years.
However, this isn’t just a pretty looking crossover. It also offers an impressive driving experience. It is arguably the sportiest model in the segment, which offers engaging handling in a combination with powerful engines, especially if you pick an optional turbo-four. At the same time, the ride isn’t too firm, so we can say Mazda engineers did an excellent job with the chassis and suspension setup.
On the inside, you will find probably the best-looking cabin in the segment. Most people will definitely love the simple interior layout, which looks very elegant and utilizes some super-fine materials. Moreover, higher trim levels are pretty much on par with premium crossovers of a similar size. Of course, there is also plenty of tech features, includes a recently-added 10.25-inch touchscreen.
The front row offers generous amounts of seats and the driver’s position is excellent. The visibility could be better rearwards, but that’s the price you pay for the gorgeous design. You won’t have problems with looking in other directions. The second row isn’t as comfortable and many rivals, but there is still a decent amount of space. What we don’t like is the cargo area, which is among the smallest in the class. You may count on about 31 cubic feet behind the second row and 60 cubic feet with these seats folded.
In terms of standard equipment, we don’t believe that too many things will change in the next year. Therefore, the list of standard features should include goodies like a 10.25-inch touch-screen, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Mazda Connected Services, a Wi-Fi hot spot, Bluetooth, two USB ports, a four-speaker stereo, and HD Radio. In higher trim levels, you may also count on goodies like dual-zone automatic climate control, proximity keyless entry, a moonroof, a universal garage door opener, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, a 7-inch digital instrument cluster display, Bose premium Audio system, satellite radio, navigation etc.
When it comes to safety features, the current list of standard equipment includes goodies like adaptive cruise control, forward collision warning, forward automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, automatic high-beam headlights, a rearview camera, and rain-sensing windshield wipers. Additionally, there are also things like adaptive headlights, a head-up display, reverse automatic emergency braking, driver attention monitoring, a surround-view parking camera system, front and rear parking sensors, and traffic sign recognition.
2022 Mazda CX-5 Engines
This aspect definitely won’t bring any particular change. The 2022 Mazda CX-5 is about to carry on with familiar engines in the offer, which starts with a naturally-aspirated four-cylinder unit that puts our 187 horsepower. It offers decent performances, though you should definitely consider an optional turbo-four. With that one, you may count on 227 horsepower on regular fuel and a full 250 horses with premium gasoline. Driving dynamics are impressive and combined with excellent handling, they deliver an impressive overall driving experience.
The fuel economy is also pretty good. You may count on about 25 mpg in the city and 31 mpg on the highway with the base engine. The turbo-four returns up to 23 mpg in the city and 28 mpg on the highway.
2022 Mazda CX-5 Release Date and Price
Since no one expects to see bigger changes for the 2022 Mazda CX-5, the launch date should be scheduled for the last quarter of the year. Also, the price should remain pretty much the same, which means around 26.000 dollars for the base model. Key competitors are models like RAV4, CR-V, Ford Escape etc.
