After the last year’s redesign, it’s pretty much for sure that the 2022 Mercedes GLA, which will represent the second production year, will carry on in the same way. Simply, the recent overhaul has brought a lot of novelties. It is bigger, looks better and, most importantly, drives better. We saw a lot of novelties in terms of mechanics and design solutions, so it’s hard to believe that the second production year could bring anything more important. Still, we won’t exclude the possibility to see minor updates like new color options, new standard features etc.
All in all, you may count on the familiar layout. The new generation drives very well and we like its look. Furthermore, we really like the engines, which are capable, efficient and very refined. Also, the cabin offers plenty of space, while the infotainment system is very intuitive. On the other side, the biggest complaint goes to the cargo area, which offers less space compared to key rivals.
Considering that there are no bigger changes to come, we expect that the 2022 Mercedes GLA release date will be scheduled for the last quarter of the year.
2022 Mercedes GLA Design
As we already mentioned, the current generation is very fresh, so there is no doubt that the updates for the next year will be minimal. This particularly refers to the overall layout, which is based on the company’s new MFA2 platform. Of course, we are talking about the FF layout, though models with all-wheel drive are also available.
Compared to the previous generation, this one is notably bigger. It features 107.4 inches in wheelbase, which is 1.1-inches longer compared to the predecessor. The ride quality is more engaging than before, while the level of comfort has remained the same.
Visually, the new look closely resembles the A-Class, which a couple of upgrades like fender flares, which make it look more rugged. For the second production year, the best we could see are additions in terms of new color options.
Interior
This aspect of the car shouldn’t bring any bigger change either. We expect to see a familiar cabin design, which features Mercedes’s typical dashboard aesthetics, with a digital instrument screen, massive touchscreen, recognizable round vents and lots of flashy details in general. The overall interior quality is at a pretty high level, though we have to say that some rivals, like Audi Q3, feature a little bit finer materials.
Thanks to the pretty long wheelbase, the amount of passenger space is pretty generous. There is plenty of legroom in both rows of seats and adults can accommodate pretty conveniently. On the other side, things aren’t that great in terms of cargo capacity. You may count on just 15.4 cubic feet behind the second row, which is too small compared to rivals. On the other side, the total cargo volume goes around 50 cubic feet, which is average for the class.
Features
We could see a couple of novelties on the list of standard equipment for the next year. However, keep in mind that we are talking about the second production year, so most of the things will certainly remain the same. The current model comes standard with goodies like dual-zone climate control, keyless entry, a 7-inch touch screen, a touchpad controller, a six-speaker stereo, HD Radio, four USB ports, Bluetooth, Apple CarPlay, and Android Auto. Additionally, you can get things like a panoramic sunroof, a 10.25-inch touch screen, a 12-speaker Burmester audio system, satellite radio, wireless device charging, a Wi-Fi hot spot, and navigation.
When it comes to safety, all models should come standard with a rearview camera, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, driver drowsiness monitoring, blind spot monitoring, vehicle exit warning etc.
2022 Mercedes GLA Engines
We expect that the engine lineup will remain the same. The base 2022 Mercedes GLA 250 will continue with a 2.0-liter turbo-four, which puts out around 221 horsepower. It’s not particularly fast, but should satisfy most drivers. If you’re up for something more potent, there are two AMG-badged versions in the offer.
The base AMG GLA 35 is good for 302 horsepower, which makes a big difference compared to the base engine. Of course, the 2022 Mercedes-AMG GLA 45 will sit at the top of the offer, with a max output of 382 horsepower.
All three engines come in pair with 8-speed dual-clutch transmission. This gearbox is fantastic if you like a fast ride. However, it can be a little bit annoying during city jams, as dual-clutch transmissions aren’t as smooth as classic automatic gearboxes.
2022 Mercedes GLA Release Date and Price
We expect that the next year’s model will hit the market sometime in the last quarter of 2021. We don’t expect bigger price changes, so the base 2022 Mercedes GLA 250 should go around 37.000 dollars. Models like BMW X1, Audi Q3 and Volvo XC40 are the key competitors.
