A few subcompact crossovers can match Crosstrek’s versatility. While most models in this segment are nothing more than raised hatchbacks, this one is notably more rugged. Even though we are talking about a typical car-like unibody platform, this model is more rigid and offers notably higher ground clearance than rivals, mixing good on and off-road driving characteristics in such a good way. The 2022 Subaru Crosstrek will continue the same.
The current generation has been around since 2017 and the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek will represent the fifth production year. If you’re familiar with Subaru’s production cycles, you know very well that this means we are talking about a final production year. Therefore, it’s hard to believe that the Japanese manufacture could bring any more notable novelty for this occasion. More likely, we will see none of them.
This means you may count on a familiar design that makes this crossover strong in so many fields. Of course, AWD is standard, while we also like the practicality of this crossover, a long list of standard and available equipment, as well as a pretty decent fuel economy.
2022 Subaru Crosstrek Design
As we’ve just mentioned, this should be the final production year of the current generation. So, no bigger changes are about to come. The 2022 Subaru Crosstrek is about to carry on with the same design, which has been updated last year. For that occasion, we saw mostly visual changes, particularly at the front. The 2021 model year gets a new front end, with a new front bumper and grille. The rear bumper also comes revised, while there is also a new Sport model, which features several exclusive styling details.
Mechanically, things have remained pretty much the same, with the exception of a new engine option. The chassis and overall layout remain the same, heavily based on the Impreza.
Once again, no bigger changes are expected. The 2022 Subaru Crosstrek will carry on with a familiar cabin layout, which is more about practicality than style. The dashboard and the overall cabin look nice, but we have to say that there are many rivals that look nicer. Still, materials are good enough and while some of them may not be the softest to the touch, they promise years of exploitation.
When it comes to the interior space, the front seats are very generous. The driving position is great, though the driver’s seat would use a little bit more lumbar support. The visibility is good in all directions. The second row is also pretty spacious for the segment and adults can fit and ride pretty comfortably. The cargo area is also pretty decent. You may count on about 20.8 cubic feet of space behind the rear seats. Folding them down opens up 55.3 cubic feet, which are above-average ratings for the class.
Subaru usually isn’t very generous with yearly updates, so we don’t expect bigger changes in terms of standard and available equipment. The list of standard models currently includes goodies like automatic climate control, a 6.5-inch touch screen, Apple CarPlay, Android Auto, a four-speaker stereo, Bluetooth, and a USB port. Additionally, you can get a bigger 8-inch touchscreen, as well as things like a moonroof, push-button start, keyless entry, a Wi-Fi hot spot, three additional USB ports, HD Radio, satellite radio, and a six- or eight-speaker stereo.
The same is with safety features. All models come standard with a rearview camera, while the list of options is pretty long and includes things like reverse automatic emergency braking, blind spot monitoring, rear cross traffic alert, forward collision warning, forward automatic emergency braking, lane keep assist, lane departure warning, and adaptive cruise control.
2022 Subaru Crosstrek Engines
The recent update has brought a new engine option. It is a bigger, 2.5-liter four-cylinder boxer engine, which puts out around 182 horsepower, which is plenty enough for decent performance. The base engine remains the same. It is a not-so-inspiring 2.0-liter naturally-aspirated unit with 152 horsepower. Both engines come in pair with a CVT gearbox, but you can also get a manual transmission.
When it comes to fuel economy, the base engine returns around 28 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway. The bigger engine is good for about 27 mpg in the city and 34 mpg on the highway.
There is also a plug-in hybrid version of this crossover, which is good for 148 horsepower and offers 17 miles of the all-electric range.
2022 Subaru Crosstrek Release Date and Price
Since there are no bigger changes to come, we presume that the 2022 Subaru Crosstrek will hit the market sometime in the last quarter of the year. The base price should go around 23.000 dollars, while key rivals are models like Mazda CX-30, Hyundai Kona, Kia Soul etc.
