2023 BMW X1 Redesign: Everything We Know So Far

The current generation of BMW’s subcompact crossover has been around since 2015 and it is about to receive a complete redesign soon. The new model will come as the 2023 BMW X1 and it will bring a lot of novelties. We’ve already spotted the test mule on the road and even though it still wears complete camouflage, a lot of things can be predicted about the new generation. Among big novelties, we also expect to see a high-performance version with the M badge, which will probably come as the M35i model.

Of course, this redesign will bring a completely new platform and lots of mechanical novelties. Furthermore, we count on a completely new exterior design, while the interior should bring important improvements as well, particularly in terms of materials and build quality. More powerful engine options are coming too.

The upcoming redesign means that the 2023 BMW X1 will be coming earlier than usual, most likely sometime in the second half of the year.

2023 BMW X1 Redesign

The upcoming redesign will bring a lot of novelties but the overall layout won’t change drastically. Instead, we will once again see a little bit of untypical design for a BMW, with front-wheel drive. Of course, the main reason is the familiar UKL platform, which is primarily used for Mini models, but which also underpins BMW’s entry-level models.

Most likely, we will see a notably updated version of the platform and most likely, we won’t see much of electrification, as the Bavarian company develops its all-electric lineup separately. The upgrades will be mostly in terms of the chassis and suspension setup, which should improve the ride quality, both in terms of handling and comfort.

Exterior

Of course, a completely new exterior design is a certain thing. The test mule has already been spotted on the road. However, it still wears a complete camouflage, so we can’t talk about details. Still, we may presume that the new model will be fitted to the brand’s latest design language. We are about to see a more aggressive look, with sharper lines, a bigger grille and similar updates.

On the other hand, the overall shape seems pretty similar. This means we may count on similar proportions as well, though we wouldn’t exclude the possibility to see a little bit longer wheelbase.

Interior

The 2023 BMW X1 interior should bring significant improvements. Simply, the outgoing model doesn’t impress in this aspect. It lacks the style of rivals like Mercedes-Benz GLA and Volvo XC40. It looks a little bit outdated, while the materials aren’t particularly great either. Of course, we also count on lots of new tech goodies, starting from a bigger infotainment screen, digital instrument cluster and more.

On the other hand, the overall cabin layout shouldn’t change drastically. The current model is already pretty spacious and functional on the inside. It comes with a couple of spacious seats that accommodate adults pretty easily. Furthermore, the cargo area is among the biggest in the class.

2023 BMW X1 Engines

As we already mentioned, we don’t expect much in terms of electrification. Most likely, things will remain pretty much the same as in the current model, which comes with a 2.0-liter turbo-four that puts out around 228 horsepower and 258 pound-feet of torque. Of course, the upcoming redesign will probably bring a bit of a power increase, while the 8-speed automatic should remain largely the same.

This engine is capable, but also pretty efficient. The current model returns around 24 mpg in the city and 33 mpg on the highway, which is pretty impressive for the class.

2023 BMW X1 M35i

Another big novelty that’s expected is a high-performance version of the SUV, which would come as the 2023 BMW X1 M35i. Of course, this version would come with all kinds of upgrades, starting from a much more powerful engine. That should be a familiar 2.0-liter turbo-four but tuned all-away up to 340 horsepower. All-wheel drive should be standard, along with 8-speed automatic transmission.

Besides a more powerful engine, this model will come with upgrades in other aspects as well. First of all, it should come with notable chassis and suspension upgrades, which would make handling even more engaging. Furthermore, bigger brakes are another thing that comes to mind. Finally, count on a couple of aesthetical upgrades, which will accentuate the model’s performance character. More details should come soon.

2023 BMW X1 Release Date and Price

We believe that the 2023 BMW X1 will be ready to hit the market sometime in the second half of 2022. The current model starts at around 37.000 dollars, so we believe that the new generation won’t cost much higher. When it comes to the competition, some of the first models that come to mind are Mercedes-Benz GLA, Audi Q3, Volvo XC40 etc.
