2023 Lexus GX 460 Preview: Features, Specs, Redesign

Some things last long, some last too long. The latter can refer to the current generation of Lexus’s mid-size SUV, which has been around for a full 12 years. Moreover, the Japanese manufacturer doesn’t rush with changes and it looks like the next generation won’t come before the 2024 model year. Meanwhile, the 2023 Lexus GX 460 will continue in the same way, featuring familiar design characteristics and features. We don’t expect to see any notable changes, especially after the 2022 model has brought some interesting novelties.

All in all, you may count on the familiar pros and cons of this body-on-frame SUV. What we really like about this model is off-road performance and the reliable V8 engine. Also, the list of standard safety and tech features is pretty long. When it comes to things we don’t like, the outdated interior comes to mind first. Also, the cabin would use more space, while the on-road ride quality isn’t spectacular.

Considering that no bigger changes are expected for the 2023 Lexus GX 460, we presume that the launch date will be scheduled for the last quarter of 2022.

The current generation has been around since 2009 and despite that we’ve seen a couple of updates, the overall layout hasn’t changed too much. This model still rides on the good-old J150 platform and shares a lot of things with Toyota Land Cruiser Prado (as well as with the Australian Toyota Fortuner) which is available in Europe, Australia and several more markets.

The styling has been updated for the 2020 model year and it has brought a lot of interesting novelties. The current iteration offers an attractive design, which follows the brand’s contemporary design philosophy, which includes the famous spindle grille, sharp headlights etc.

Still, the main reason why we like this SUV is its off-road capabilities. The GX features 8.1 inches of ground clearance, while the modest 109.8 wheelbase also provides benefits regarding off-road potential. Also, you may count on some interesting pieces of off-road hardware, such as standard 4WD, two-speed transfer case, locking differential with variable torque split, a transmission cooler, crawl control, and a Multi-Terrain Monitor, which uses cameras to give you a view of the terrain under the vehicle.

Interior

The 2023 Lexus GX interior will also continue in the same way. Not many things have changed in the last several years so, despite great build quality, the dashboard looks old and less upscale compared to rivals. Still, the 2022 model has brought a new infotainment screen, which makes the cabin look more attractive.

Due to the pretty modest wheelbase, the amount of passenger space isn’t spectacular. The front seats are massive and supportive, while the second row is decent enough for adult passengers. On the other hand, the third row is very tight and can be used by kids only. The cargo area is also very small by the standards of a mid-size SUV. It offers around 11.6 cubic feet of cargo space with the third row up, 46.7 cubic feet with the third row folded, and 64.7 cubic feet of the total cargo volume.

Features

We don’t expect to see any notable changes regarding the standard and available equipment. So, the base GX 460 should come standard with goodies like a 10.3-inch touchscreen with Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, Bluetooth, hands-free phone calls, SiriusXM satellite radio, dual-zone automatic climate control and push-button start. Additionally, there are upgrades like tri-zone climate control, navigation, and a 17-speaker Mark Levinson premium audio system.

When it comes to safety features, all models will come standard with a rearview camera, rear cross traffic alert, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane departure alert, adaptive cruise control, automatic high-beam headlights, and blind spot monitoring. Also, there are upgrades like front and rear parking sensors, LED fog lights, rain-sensing windshield wipers, and a surround-view parking camera system.

2023 Lexus GX 460 Engine

The 2023 Lexus GX 460 will continue with the well-known and proven 4.6-liter V8 engine, which may not be the most efficient unit around but which offers a super-high level of reliability. It features a max output of 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque, which is enough to move this SUV with authority. The 6-speed automatic transmission sends power to all wheels and does a pretty good job in general.

On the other hand, fuel economy isn’t great. You may count on about 15 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway. Those are some of the lowest ratings in the class.

Considering that no bigger changes are expected for the next year, we presume that the 2023 Lexus GX 460 will hit the market sometime in the last quarter of 2022. The base price should go around 55.000 dollars.

  1. I’m loving my 2011 GX… looks great parked next to my 2010 FJ Cruiser in the garage…

  2. They can keep it. It’s almost as obsolete as the 4Runner.
