2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is Becoming Even More Efficient

The SUV was already very efficient, but the Japanese company is taking the gas mileage to another level. The fourth generation of the Outlander debuted in 2021. We knew that the old plug-in hybrid is not going to be out for too much longer. The 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV is unveiled at the company’s US headquarters, announcing even better performances. This was the best-selling plug-in hybrid worldwide, and success in the United States made the carmaker develop a new, better version.

Electric support for the conventional drivetrain is the key. Mitsubishi bosses recognized it and threw all the cards into research on how to make the PHEV more efficient. Not only that – the Super All-Wheel Control is becoming one of the best AWD systems in the market. Advanced technologies will make the ride smoother. Plus, the new Outlander is more spacious than before. That includes the 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. Other highlights are a superb warranty and environmental-friendly drivetrain, with minimal emissions.

There are no too many details available. However, fans believe that the new 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander plug-in hybrid is coming with an improved range and increased price. We will find out everything about the crossover SUV later in 2022.

2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV What’s New?

First of all, the plug-in hybrid is carrying over the styling from the base Outlander. Well, that is expected, since the company launched the new generation in 2021 with fresh styling and more space inside. The fourth series of the crossover is a bit longer than its predecessor. But, the redesign made the interior more spacious. Also, the company worked on comfort. The company is yet to unveil details about pricing and trim levels available for a hybrid version of the small SUV. ES, SE and SEL are standard packages. The regular Outlander also comes with variations and additional bundles of features. Expect an update in the PHEV lineup. SEL should be an entry-level model. We would also like to see a sporty GT trim.

2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Range, Specs

The drivetrain is the part that makes the difference between the 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV and other similar vehicles. It was one of the most efficient configurations already. The best proof is leading worldwide sales. It gave confidence to the company and its engineers to enhance the system and make the Outlander plug-in hybrid even better.

At the launch, spokesmen didn’t mention the performance. So, we can go through the specs list of the previous version to see what to expect from the upcoming crossover. It belongs to the compact segment where most models are using four-cylinder units. A 2.4-liter displacement is the main source of power for the current edition. We assume the Japanese company is keeping the petrol drivetrain. Thanks to the electric support, the powertrain system can produce 225 hp and keep the gas mileage around 74 MPGe. If you drive the crossover by using only electric motors, the range is 24 miles.

Every number is becoming better for the 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV. The power outputs could reach 250 hp and the range of electric units goes above 30 miles. Having in mind that the average commuting range is a bit more than 15 miles, the Outlander plug-in hybrid will be able to take most Americans to work and back without CO2 emission.

Super All-Wheel Control System Improvements

The company also worked on its legendary all-wheel drive system, called Super All-Wheel Control, or S-AWC. Now it features more advanced technologies to make the ride even smoother. Seven drive modes are available, for the best ride quality, regardless of the road and weather conditions. This system is standard for the 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV, while the base crossover is offering the S-AWC as an optional upgrade.

2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV Release Date and Price Prediction

The production of the 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander PHEV starts late in 2022 and sales will wait for the next year. The redesign and upgrades of the drivetrain and performance will make the plug-in hybrid version cost at least $40,000. Well, it is not such a big price correction, having in mind that all vehicles are more expensive nowadays. Still, the Outlander PHEV is going to return the investment through the excellent gas mileage. With the rising gas price, this is going to be more than a reasonable purchase.

Competition

There are more PHEVs available in the US market. Definitely, the most attention draws to the Toyota Rav4 Prime. The performance crossover can deliver 302 hp and get 38 mpg. Ford Escape is also a notable rival with similar mileage. Plenty of hybrids are also at US dealerships, and in the next couple of seasons, all-electric drivetrains will be released.
