2024 Mazda CX-5: End of Production?

After the recent launch of the brand-new CX-50, many started to question the future of the CX-5. Namely, the two models are similar in many ways and they practically fight in the same segment. Therefore, it’s no wonder that many rumors suggest the older sibling could end its production soon. The company decided to keep it for now but the latest reports suggest that the 2024 Mazda CX-5 could be the final production year of the nameplate. At this point, the officials are still quiet on this matter.

If this happens, we are pretty sure that the Japanese manufacturer won’t introduce too many novelties for the final model year. Instead, we expect to see a typical carryover model, with familiar design characteristics and features. That model will continue to impress with amazing handling and ride quality, as well as with impressive interior design. On the other hand, it will also continue with the tight second-row seats and small cargo area.

We expect that the 2024 Mazda CX-5 will arrive sometime in the last quarter of 2023.

2024 Mazda CX-5 Design

Considering that this is expected to be the final production year of the generation, we expect no bigger changes. The overall layout will remain the same and the 2024 Mazda CX-5 will continue to feature a design that’s been around for several years. The model still looks fresh and attractive and that is still one of its main selling points.

Another strong selling point of this model is the ride quality. This crossover offers a pretty impressive level of athleticism, something that you won’t get from other models in the class. It’s also important to mention that all-wheel drive is now standard in all models, so you may count not just on engaging handling, but also on the great grip in all conditions.

Interior

The cabin design has always been Mazda’s thing. The current CX-5 looks impressive from this aspect, with one of the most elegant cabins on the market. We like the dashboard’s simplistic design, which is complemented by impressive materials and build quality. The sound insulation is also pretty good, while we also like the long list of standard and available equipment.

On the other hand, what we don’t like is the second row of seats, which is tighter compared to most rivals. The front seats are spacious and comfortable though. Another thing we don’t like is the small cargo area, which offers around 29.1 cubic feet of space behind the rear row and 58.1 cubic feet of the total cargo volume. That’s nowhere near class leaders like Hyundai Tucson or Honda CR-V.

Features

Minor changes are always possible in this aspect but we have no doubt that most things are about to remain the same. Therefore, all models should come standard with goodies like a 10.25-inch display, Android Auto, Apple CarPlay, Mazda Connected Services, a Wi-Fi hot spot, Bluetooth, two USB ports, a four-speaker stereo, and HD Radio. Among available features, expect to find things like two rear USB ports, a six-speaker stereo, a 10-speaker Bose sound system, satellite radio, navigation, a 7-inch digital instrument cluster display, dual-zone automatic climate control, proximity keyless entry, a moonroof, a universal garage door opener, an auto-dimming rearview mirror, and ambient interior lighting.

The same is with safety features. So, base models should come standard with goodies like adaptive cruise control, rearview camera, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane departure warning, lane keep assist, blind-spot monitoring, rear cross-traffic alert, automatic high beams etc. Additionally, you can get goodies like adaptive headlights, head-up display, reverse automatic emergency braking, driver attention monitoring, surround-view camera system, front and rear parking sensors, traffic sign recognition etc.

2024 Mazda CX-5 Engines

No surprises under the hood are expected. So, base models will continue with a naturally-aspirated 2.5-liter engine, which puts out around 187 horsepower. Driving dynamics are decent with this one, though the optional turbo-four feels like a much better choice. That one puts out 256 horsepower and offers notably better performance. Both engines come with a 6-speed automatic transmission, which does a very good job. As we already mentioned, all-wheel drive is standard in all models.

When it comes to fuel economy, you may count on typical ratings in the class. The base engine returns around 24 mpg in the city and 30 mpg on the highway, while the turbo-four is good for about 23 mpg in the city and 27 mpg on the highway.

  1. Tell me it ain’t so! This will be in my opinion a huge mistake. I was waiting on a CX-5 Hybrid…come on Mazda. Put in a Toyota Hybrid in the CX-5.

  2. This would surprise me and disappointment me as the CX-5 and CX-50 are aimed at two totally different markets.

We need a new, redesign of the CX-5, not the annihilation of it.

C’mon Mazda, CX-5 is your best selling model.
    Smarten up, don’t end it!
