It may be outdated, but the current generation of Toyota’s famous mid-size SUV is more popular than ever. The sales numbers skyrocketed in the last few years, mainly because of the fact that the 4Runner is one of the few remaining genuine mid-size SUVs that ride on a good-old body-on-frame platform. Considering the popularity of the current model, it’s no wonder that the company doesn’t rush with the redesign, even though the current model hasn’t changed much since 2009. Still, it looks like the overhaul will finally happen in the next year. We expect to see a completely new 2024 Toyota 4Runner.
At this point, the company is still quiet about the next-generation 4Runner but some things are relatively easy to presume. Of course, we are talking about the overall layout, which will remain the same. The new generation will remain a capable mid-size BoF SUV, while the main improvements are expected in terms of the powertrain, interior quality and similar things.
The all-new 2024 Toyota 4Runner will probably hit the market sometime in the second half of 2023.
2024 Toyota 4Runner Redesign
There is a lot to expect from the 2024 Toyota 4Runner redesign. As we’ve just mentioned, the overall design approach is expected to remain the same but we have no doubt that the new model will get a new platform. Of course, that will be the new TNGA-F platform, which already underpins models like Tundra and Sequoia.
The new platform will bring notable improvements regarding ride quality but on the other hand, we don’t expect to see bigger changes in size. The new model should also feature around 110 inches in wheelbase. In that way, the SUV will retain its high off-road potential. Speaking of the off-road potential, we expect all models to come equipped with a lot of off-road hardware. Most likely, 4WD will be standard, as well as the rear locking differential. On the other hand, the TRD Pro model will go full throttle and probably come with locking differentials on both axles, upgraded suspension, and other things.
Visually, we expect that the 2024 Toyota 4Runner will be adapted to the brand’s latest design language. Some similarities with the new Sequoia are expected, but we also count on a lot of exclusive styling details. After all, this model is very important for the company, both in terms of profit and reputation.
Interior
If you look at the current model, one of the biggest complaints goes to outdated interior design. That’s no wonder, considering that not many things have changed since 2009. The overall cabin layout is still the same, while tech features (although updated) don’t seem particularly modern either.
All this will change with the redesigned 2024 Toyota 4Runner. We will see a completely new cabin, which will look way more attractive and which will utilize much finer materials and feature better build quality. We also count on the latest infotainment features.
In terms of interior space, we already mentioned that the new model probably won’t bigger changes in dimension. Therefore, the amount of passenger space should remain pretty similar, which means that the third row won’t be particularly generous with space. The same could be said for the cargo area.
2024 Toyota 4Runner Engines
Another weak point of the current generation is the powertrain. Although super-reliable and decently capable, the current 4.0-liter V6 with 270 horsepower and a very thirsty engine. It returns something like 16 mpg in the city and 19 mpg on the highway, which is very low for the segment. Also, the 5-speed automatic feels very outdated.
Fortunately, all this will change. We will see a new engine and new transmission. Most likely, the new 2024 Toyota 4Runner will be powered by a new 2.4-liter turbo-four engine. This one puts out around 275 horsepower and 309 pound-feet of torque, though we might some slight power increase for this occasion. Along with the new engine, we expect a new 10-speed automatic transmission, which should significantly improve efficiency and overall ride quality.
Some sources also speculate about a hybrid version. Allegedly, this version would also use the 2.4-liter turbo-four, but in a combination with electric motors. The total output would probably go somewhere around 350 horsepower, while the 10-speed automatic would also be the transmission choice.
2024 Toyota 4Runner Release Date and Price
While the officials are still quiet about this redesign, unofficial reports suggest that the new model could arrive sometime in the second half of the next year. When it comes to the 2024 Toyota 4Runner price, we presume that base models could go around 40.000 dollars. When it comes to the competition, models like Jeep Wrangler and Ford Bronco would remain the key rivals.
