2024 VW Touareg Is Getting Mid-Cycle Refresh

The third generation of VW’s flagship SUV has been around since 2018 and it looks like it’s time for updates. The German carmaker prepares a facelift of its most expensive model and the test model has already been spotted. Although it still hides the changes, we can clearly see that this update will be mostly about aesthetics. Both ends of the 2024 VW Touareg will get new styling details.

On the other hand, details about the interior design are still unclear, though we won’t drop the possibility to see a few interior updates as well, at least in terms of new features and color schemes. When it comes to powertrain, things will predominately remain the same, though there is a big chance that several powertrain options will get updated with a mild-hybrid setup. This particularly refers to more basic gasoline and diesel variants.

We expect that the 2024 VW Touareg will hit the market sometime in the second half of the year.

2024 VW Touareg Design

As we’ve just mentioned, the German manufacturer prepares a mid-cycle refresh of the current, third generation. The test mule has been spotted in snow and it shows a couple of camouflaged areas, which clearly indicate where we can expect changes. At the front, you can see pieces of cover that mimic the design of the outgoing model, all in order to trick the viewers. Therefore, we presume that the 2024 VW Touareg will come with new headlights, as well as with changes in the surrounding areas.

The rear end also comes with a bit of camouflage. In this case, taillights are clearly covered with classic camo, so there is no doubt that the updated models will come with the new ones. Other than that, we also expect to see typical mid-cycle updates, such as new color options, new wheels and similar things.

When it comes to mechanics, we don’t expect to see more important changes. Instead, the chassis and suspension setup should remain the same, which makes perfect sense, considering that the current model offers a pretty impressive driving experience. Simply, air suspension comes as a part of standard equipment and it offers a fantastic balance between comfort and athleticism, in a similar way as the Audi Q7 does.

Interior

The upcoming mid-cycle refresh might bring novelties to the inside as well. At this point, details are still unavailable but we presume that slight revisions could happen on the dashboard, on the center console etc. Even if we see no design changes, we could expect new color schemes, as well as some new materials. In any case, most things will remain the same as in the current model, which is characterized by a conservative but pretty elegant design, which is complemented by a good portion of tech features.

The 2024 VW Touareg will remain a pretty big SUV, so the amount of passenger space will remain generous. There are two very spacious and comfortable rows of seats, along with the optional third row, which may be tighter but still offers a reasonable level of comfort. The cargo area is pretty decent as well. Base models already come with leather upholstery, power-adjustable seats, heated steering wheels and seats etc. Some sources suggest that the currently-optional 15-inch infotainment screen could also become part of the standard equipment. Parking sensors could be added to the list of standard equipment as well, to accompany goodies like automatic emergency braking, lane-keeping assist, adaptive cruise control and traffic-sign recognition.

2024 VW Touareg Engines

Updates under the hood are possible as well, though not significant ones. Most likely, the current engines will get slightly electrified, with a mild 48-volt hybrid setup. This will probably include all models and provide slightly better fuel efficiency. The current lineup starts with a 2.0-liter turbo-four that puts out 250 horsepower. Of course, there is also a good-old 3.0-liter V6 with 340 horsepower. In most markets, the Touareg is also available with a diesel engine, with a good-old 3.0-liter V6, which comes in tow power outputs, with 228 and 282 horsepower.

Finally, there is a super-capable plug-in hybrid version, based on a 3.0-liter V6 gasoline engine, which puts out 450 horsepower and 700Nm of torque.

All models come coupled with an 8-speed automatic transmission.

2024 VW Touareg Release Date

Despite the updates, we don’t believe that the 2024 VW Touareg could come much earlier than usual. It should hit the market sometime in the second half of the year.
