2024 Volvo EX90: Volvo’s Vision of Electrification

Automotive electrification is on a swing and the Swedish carmaker is one of the companies that has been following this trend pretty successfully. Now, it’s time for a flagship model, which will debut as the 2024 Volvo EX90 in North America. Not only that it will be all-electric, but it will also be the most luxurious and, therefore, most expensive Volvo on the market, positioned above the internal combustion XC90, which should remain in production for a few more years.

In terms of design characteristics, the new EX90 is, as you may presume, a crossover. Slightly bigger but also sleeker than the aforementioned counterpart. It brings an attractive exterior design, in combination with an elegant and simplistic interior, full of advanced tech features. Finally, there is the powertrain, which will come in two iterations. Both setups will feature dual electric motors, respectable performance and competitive autonomy.

We expect the 2024 Volvo EX90 to hit the market by the end of this year.

As mentioned, the 2024 Volvo EX90 is coming as a completely new model, which will be the most prestigious vehicle in the lineup of this Swedish carmaker. It will be all-electric and with mid-size proportions. This means it will be similar to the XC90, with the identical 117.5-inch wheelbase but three more inches in total length. The SUV will ride on an updated, SPA2 platform, and will bring all kinds of modern technologies, especially when it comes to the battery charging speed and its overall performance, as well as in terms of autonomous driving.

As for the styling, the EX90 looks a little bit sleeker than the XC90. Most of the aesthetics are inspired by the Volvo Concept Recharge, presented two years ago. The headlights look pretty similar, just like the rest of the front-end design, while the overall shape isn’t much different either.

Interior

Of course, the inside of the SUV will follow the futuristic nature of the exterior design. Typically for Volvo, and typically for modern electric cars, things will be pretty simple. The dashboard looks minimalistic, designed in a typical Scandinavian manner. It features very simple lines that are complemented by high-quality materials and a full load of tech features. Speaking of the tech features, there is a massive, vertically-oriented infotainment screen, while the instrument cluster is also digital.

Considering the same wheelbase and similar dimensions, we may expect to see a similar amount of passenger space as in the XC90. Therefore, base models should already come with three rows of seats and the ability to accommodate 7 passengers. Will the third row be tight, or adult-friendly, it is still hard to say. On the other hand, we definitely expect to see respectable numbers when it comes to the cargo area.

Features

As the most expensive and most prestigious model in Volvo’s lineup, the new all-electric crossover will certainly come fully loaded with standard and available equipment. As mentioned, one of the highlights will be a massive 14.5-inch vertically-oriented infotainment screen, equipped with in-dash navigation powered by Google Maps. The list of standard tech features will also include goodies like wireless Apple CarPlay, along with a 5G cellular data connection. On the other hand, the premium 25-speaker audio system provided by Bowers and Wilkins will be an optional feature.

As for the safety and driver-assistance features, the Swedish carmaker has always been among the leaders in the industry. Therefore, we count on a long list of advanced systems. We have no doubt that things like automatic emergency braking with pedestrian and cyclist detection, lane departure, lane keep assist, adaptive cruise control, lane centering and many more will be part of the standard equipment.

2024 Volvo EX90 Powertrain, Battery, Performance

As we already mentioned, there will be at least two variants in terms of drivetrain, both with dual electric motors and all-wheel drive. The base version will feature a couple of units that provide a combined output of 402 horsepower. That version will be called Twin Motor, while the more capable Twin Motor Performance model will feature a max output of 496 horsepower. According to the manufacturer, the base model will be able to hit 60 in about 5.7 seconds, while the Twin Motor Performance should be a second faster.

Besides performance, the battery and range will also be competitive. The new SUV will feature a 111-kWh battery pack, which should ensure around 300 miles of range. Besides good autonomy, this battery will also support respectable charging speed, with the ability to charge 80 percent of the battery in about 30 minutes.
