2022 Lexus GX460 Preview: Changes, Features, Release Date

According to the latest reports, the next generation of this capable luxury off-roader won’t come before 2023. So, there are few more years for the current generation and it’s quite easy to conclude that we won’t see bigger changes before the overhaul. The current generation has been around for nearly 12 years. Although it feels outdated in some aspects, it still has a lot of things to offer, especially when it comes to off-road capabilities, which is quite rare thing among luxury SUVs these days. The 2022 Lexus GX460 won’t feature too many changes. So, we expect to see it sometime in the last quarter of the year.

This means you may count on a familiar layout, which still has a lot of great things to offer, starting from great off-road performances. Furthermore, this SUV features a nice and quiet interior, as well as a quite long list of standard features. The list of good things about his SUV ends with a traditionally excellent reliability rating but that doesn’t mean this SUV isn’t without flaws. It features an outdated interior design, a thirsty V8 engine and doesn’t seem particularly engaging on the road.

2022 Lexus GX460 Design

Since 2022 Lexus GX460 redesign is not going to happen, most of the things are about to remain the same. Therefore, you may count on a familiar layout, which has been around since 2009. The mechanics have remained pretty much the same since then, but there were a couple of updates in terms of aesthetics, so we can say the model looks pretty modern from the outside, following the company’s contemporary design language.

In terms of the mechanics, this is primarily an off-roader. The 4×4 layout is standard. You can also get things like crawl control, a transmission cooler and Multi-Terrain Select, which offers different traction modes, depending on the surface and terrain. Finally, there is the Multi-Terrain Monitor, which uses cameras to give you a view of the terrain under the vehicle.

Interior

Bigger 2022 Lexus GX460 interior changes shouldn’t happen either. You may count on a familiar cabin layout, which has both good and bad things. When it comes to good things, the overall build quality is impressive, while we also like the sound insulation. Also, the list of standard equipment is very, very long.

On the other side, the infotainment system lacks Android Auto and Apple CarPlay. Also, the dashboard looks outdated, despite the excellent build quality. Also, you don’t get much passenger space in the second and third rows. Finally, the cargo area is quite small for the class. You may count on about 11.6 cubic feet of cargo space with the third row up, 46.7 cubic feet with the third row folded, and 64.7 cubic feet with the second row folded.

Features

Considering that there are few more years before the redesign, it seems quite possible to see updates on the infotainment system. This update could finally bring Apple CarPlay and Android Auto, while a couple more additions to the list of standard equipment are also possible. Still, most of the things will certainly remain the same, so the list of standard features will include goodies like dual-zone climate control, push-button start, an 8-inch touch screen, nine speakers, Amazon Alexa capability, voice command, Bluetooth, four USB ports, and HD Radio. The list of options currently includes goodies like navigation, the Lexus Enform App Suite, premium audio system, tri-zone climate control etc.

The GX460 has always been praised for the impressive amount of safety features. The current list of standard equipment includes safety features like rear cross traffic alert, forward collision warning, automatic emergency braking, pedestrian detection, lane departure alert, adaptive cruise control, automatic high-beam headlights, and blind spot monitoring. Additionally, you can get things like a surround-view camera, front and rear parking sensors, LED fog lights, rain-sensing windshield wipers etc.

2022 Lexus GX460 Engine

When it comes to powertrain, the 2022 Lexus GX460 will continue to rely on a good-old 4.6-liter V8. It puts out around 301 horsepower and 329 pound-feet of torque. This definitely isn’t too much for the class, but feels more than enough for most drivers. A six-speed transmission is not the finest but does a quite decent job.

The biggest drawback of this engine is fuel economy, which goes around 15 mpg in the city and 19 on the highway. Those are some of the worst ratings in the class. On the other side, the engine is extremely reliable and durable. So, you probably won’t have to spend too much money on maintenance and repairs.

2022 Lexus GX460 Release Date and Price

We expect to see the 2022 Lexus GX460 sometime in the last quarter of the year. The starting price should go around 54.000 dollars. Currently, the aren’t too many off-roaders in the segment. So, probably the only direct competitor would be Land Rover Discovery, as well as the new Defender.
