The new all-new, fifth generation of Kia’s compact crossover is on the way. After six years of production, the current model will be replaced with a completely new one, which will come as the 2022 Kia Sportage. Of course, we count on a lot of novelties and improvements, just like we saw in the new Tucson, which also came completely new last year.
The new model is still in the testing phase and still wears a complete camouflage. Therefore, we can’t say too much about the styling, even though there are numerous rendering photos on the network. We could say pretty much the same thing for the interior design. On the other side, the fact that this model will share mechanics with the new Tucson gives us the opportunity to predict the exact engine lineup pretty accurately.
The new2022 Kia Sportage is about to hit the market sometime in the second half of the year. We are still waiting to hear a more precise date.
2022 Kia Sportage Redesign
The 2022 Kia Sportage redesign will bring a lot of novelties. Even though the test mule still wears a heavy cover and the styling is a bit of a mystery, we know some of the more basic things about this crossover. Of course, one of the first things that come to mind is the platform, which will be new. Thanks to the new architecture, the new model will become lighter and more efficient. Furthermore, we count on a lower center of gravity, which will improve handling and driving characteristics in general.
Also, we know that the new model will become slightly bigger. Instead of the current 105.1 inches in wheelbase, the new model will be good for 105.5. Although this isn’t a significant increase, it will certainly have a positive impact on the passenger room.
Styling
As we already mentioned, the testing model has been spotted but it still wears a heavy camouflage. Therefore, we can’t tell too much about the styling. From what we can see, the overall shape doesn’t seem drastically different compared to the previous generation. On the other side, we can see a couple of hints under the camouflage that suggest a completely new front end.
It looks like things will be completely opposite compared to the predecessor. While the outgoing model features pretty rounded lines and shapes, the new model seems to look far more angular. That particularly refers to the front end, and we can even see possible solutions in the rendering photos.
Interior
The inside of the new model is also a mystery. Even though we can find spy shots that show a little bit of the cabin, most of the dashboard is still under camouflage. The only thing we can see are things like upholstery and two-tone seats. Other than that, things are yet to be seen.
Still, we may presume that the new cabin will look more upscale than before. We count on more attractive aesthetics and finer materials. As we already mentioned, the model will also feature a slightly longer wheelbase, so the 2022 Kia Sportage interior should include more legroom as well. We also hope for a little bit more room in the cargo area, considering that the outgoing model isn’t particularly great in this aspect.
2022 Kia Sportage Engines
When it comes to the powertrain, we don’t expect to see bigger surprises. Base models will probably stick with a naturally-aspirated engine. Of course, we think of a well-known 2.5-liter inline-four, which puts out around 185 horsepower and comes in pair with 8-speed automatic transmission.
We also count on a familiar 1.6-liter turbo-four, which comes in two output variants, with either 150 or 180 horsepower. Unlike the base inline-four, this one comes in a couple with a 7-speed DCT transmission, while a manual gearbox is also available in certain parts of the world.
Finally, there are two 2022 Kia Sportage hybrid versions to come. The first one will be a classic hybrid, based on a 1.6-liter turbo-four, with a total output of 230 horsepower. The same engine will serve as the basis for a plug-in hybrid version, which will come with a more powerful electric motor and a bigger battery. The total output will go up to 265 horsepower. With this setup, you may also count on an all-electric range of around 28 miles.
2022 Kia Sportage Release Date and Price
We expect that the new generation will hit the market sometime in the second half of the year. When it comes to the 2022 Kia Sportage price, we don’t expect a bigger increase compared to the current model, which starts at around 25.000 dollars.
