2023 Hyundai Terracan: Korean BoF SUV on the Way!?

Just a few years ago, we were all thinking about how the era of old-school body-on-frame SUVs is over. Although crossovers did take over the market, there is still solid demand for traditional SUVs. The Wrangler is traditionally super-popular, while even the outdated Toyota 4Runner marks great sales results. That’s why the Korean carmaker is seriously considering bringing back the Terracan nameplate. The latest reports suggest that Hyundai’s BoF SUV is about to come back, more rugged than ever, as the 2023 Hyundai Terracan.

At this point, this is just a rumor. On the other hand, the officials are still quiet, so we suggest you take the following paragraphs with a reserve. In any case, if the company is willing to bring back the familiar nameplate, we know what to expect, at least when it comes to base design characteristics. We would expect to see a genuine body-on-frame design, with a rugged layout and strong off-road performances.

The original Terracan was produced almost two decades ago. That model was based a lot on the second-generation Mitsubishi Pajero and therefore, it offers pretty impressive off-road performance. The new model, however, won’t be based on the Japanese counterpart. Instead, we expect to see a ladder chassis designed by Korean engineers. Of course, rugged construction is the first thing that comes to mind, while we also count on strong off-road potential.

Speaking of off-roading, we presume that the company will offer some kind of a dedicated version as well. Base models will probably come with standard four-wheel drive and maybe with low-range gearing. On the other hand, higher trim levels could bring upgrades like locking differentials, additional skid plates, better off-road tires, upgraded suspension etc.

Exterior

The original Terracan was characterized by a typical BoF design, with large dimensions and a bulky overall shape. We have no doubt that the new model will also be pretty large. Some sources speculate about the full-size Segment, where Terracan would compete with models like Tahoe or Expedition. However, we think that the 2023 Hyundai Terracan will rather be a mid-size SUV, which would compete in the segment where key players are models like Toyota 4Runner and the four-door Wrangler.

When it comes to aesthetics, it’s still early for any predictions, especially if we consider that Hyundai is a company that often changes its aesthetical approach. On the other hand, some interesting unofficial renderings can be found on the network and they show a rather muscular design, with sharper edges and a bit of a futuristic design approach. We can see a fine portion of muscles, as well as a front end that comes with narrow headlights and a pretty massive grille.

Interior

At this point, it’s hard to say much about the cabin design. We presume that the dashboard will come with a modern design approach, with the dashboard that looks a little bit bolder than usual, in order to accentuate the model’s BoF design. Of course, we expect build quality to be at a high level, while the materials should rather be durable than soft-touch. The overall interior design will be complemented by a generous amount of tech features, which would include things like a massive infotainment screen, digital instrument cluster, various connectivity features etc.

If the 2023 Hyundai Terracan is about to feature mid-size proportions, we presume it will feature three rows of seats. Typical for this class of vehicles, the third row should be relatively tight and not particularly adult-friendly. On the other hand, the first and the second row should be pretty generous with space and pretty adult-friendly. The cargo area should also offer a respectable volume, with over 80 cubic feet of total space.

2023 Hyundai Terracan Engines

The original model combined its own with Mitsubishi-licensed engines, the new generation will rather rely on Hyundai’s technical achievements. One of the possibilities is the familiar 3.8-liter V6, which already powers models like the Palisade, with a max output of around 290 horsepower. Of course, higher trim levels could come powered with something more capable. One of the units that come to mind is a 3.5-liter turbocharged V6, which puts out around 375 horsepower. Finally, we could see a diesel version offered in some markets. That would be a 3.0-liter V6 turbodiesel, which puts out around 274 horsepower and 434 pound-feet of torque.

All engines should come paired with an 8-speed automatic transmission, which would send power to all wheels.
