It’s been a while since Mitsubishi updated its small crossover. The Outlander Sport is attractive and agile, a perfect ride for urban areas. Well, the Eclipse Cross is even better if you want to save fuel. However, the driving experience and comfort are not a match to the 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport.
The crossover is ready for the redesign. The idea is warmed up with the arrival of the all-new Outlander. The most popular vehicle in the family is the base for the 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport, as you can guess from the name. With the update of the main product, we can expect other vehicles to follow their footsteps and use a similar design language in the future.
There is still no any detail about the update. Also, we are monitoring the situation with the Mitsubishi ASX. This is a vehicle very similar to Outlander Sport available in many markets outside the US. The company is playing slowly and we expect a surprising entrance of the all-new crossover.
All-New 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Styling
The fresh look of the crossover will be inspired by the new Outlander. The company turned its most popular vehicle into a more aggressive vehicle. That is exactly what the small SUV needed to continue to build its reputation in the tough market. Now, it is obvious that the 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport is going to use the same solutions.
The crossover is gaining some length and possibly width. It will be closer to 175 inches. It promises more room inside the vehicle. That fixes one of the major downsides – interior comfort. Plus, there will be more space for cargo. Nevertheless, the gas mileage won’t be harmed thanks to higher usage of lightweight materials.
Engines, Specs, Turbo GT Configuration
The base powerplant for the 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport remains a 2.0-liter unit. A 2.0-liter naturally-aspirated unit is good for 148 hp. It is enough for the subcompact crossover. A four-cylinder mill also adds 145 lb-ft of torque. A carryover is not a surprise, since the engine proved itself as one of the most reliable powertrains in the class. Still, the gas mileage could be better. The Outlander Sport needs to improve from the current 24/30 mpg rating. A new transmission replacing CVT is possible.
The 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport GT should also be back for the next season. It replaces a 2.0 engine with a 2.4-liter turbo-four setup. The result is better performance, while not harming the fuel economy too much. This setup is good for 168 hp, features all-wheel drive, and keeps the gas mileage at 23/28 mpg. A naturally-aspirated I4 engine with an AWD is at 23/29 miles per gallon. The Outlander Sport is not going to offer a Super-All-Wheel Control system.
Still, the vehicle will be suitable for some off-road fun. An all-wheel drive is a full-time version. Plus, the crossover comes with 8.5 inches of ground clearance. If you pick all-terrain tires, you are ready for adventures.
2023 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Hybrid
Interesting, the subcompact crossover is not offering a hybrid setup. Outlander is, on the other hand, one of the most efficient systems in the market. A 2.4-liter engine is under the hood and gets support from electric motors. Just for the comparison, the standard Outlander is using a 2.5-liter engine. Well, 220 horsepower would be too much for the Sport edition. So, the company could pair a 2.0-liter mill with batteries, to make either a mild-hybrid or the PHEV system. Either way, the gas mileage improvements will draw the attention of buyers looking for vehicles whose main highlight is efficiency.
Trim Levels, Colors and Other Changes
S, ES, LE and SE were packages available for the crossovers with a smaller engine. The GT used a 2.4-liter mill. Compared to the lineup of the all-new Outlander, the 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport should reshuffle options. The SEL model will take the place as the top of the range version. Also, the GT will stay in the lineup, but with more options. A hybrid setup will use packages of higher tiers.
The base crossover is not going to be there to impress buyers with anything else but the price. So, a small engine, basic equipment, and no advanced options will make it cost pretty much the same as it is priced now. The MSRP starts from $23,000. The GT version will be over $30,000. A hybrid engine will increase the price further. Still, the MHEV is definitely not as expensive as the PHEV configuration.
2023 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport Competition
The crossover is positioned somewhere between the subcompact and compact crossover class with a total length under 175 inches. That means the 2023 Mitsubishi Outlander Sport will compete with Nissan Rogue Sport and Chevy Trailblazer. This is a new segment in the market but seems to be more popular than the mini SUV tier. If you still want a smaller crossover, then the Mitsubishi Eclipse Sport is a choice.
