The current generation of Lexus’ mid-size SUV looks like it’s been around forever, which isn’t far from the truth. It was introduced back in 2009 and we are eagerly waiting to see a full redesign. According to the latest reports, this will finally happen in the next year. The all-new, next-generation model will debut as the 2024 Lexus GX and we expect to see all kinds of novelties.
Considering the current model’s age, there is no doubt that the number of changes will be significant. We will see a completely new design, based on the company’s new platform, which will bring improvements regarding ride quality. Furthermore, we count on new aesthetics, new interior design and loads of new tech features. Another big change will happen under the hood. The good-old V8 will be replaced with a new, hybrid powertrain and the latest reports suggest a system based on a turbo-four engine.
Although the officials are still quiet, we expect that the 2024 Lexus GX will hit the market sometime in the second half of the year.
2024 Lexus GX Redesign
Without any doubt, this redesign will bring lots of novelties. So, the first thing that comes to mind is the platform. Just like the rest of the company’s BoF lineup, this model will switch to the new TNGA-F platform, which already underpins models like Tundra and LX. This particular model should share most parts with the next-generation Land Cruiser Prado, as well as with the next 4Runner.
Compared to the outgoing model, it will feature a completely new suspension setup, which will provide a smoother and more comfortable ride. On the other hand, we have no doubt that off-road performances will remain the 2024 Lexus GX’s speciality. All models will come with four-wheel drive, center locking differential, two-speed transfer case etc. Also, we count on upgrades like front and rear locking differentials, further suspension upgrades, additional traction modes etc.
Exterior
When it comes to exterior design, the first thing we should talk about is the size. We don’t expect bigger changes in this aspect, so the wheelbase should go around 110 inches. With such a relatively short distance between the axles, the new model will retain high off-road potential, prioritizing it over passenger legroom and interior space in general.
The overall shape should remain pretty similar as well. We will see a typical SUV layout, with short overhangs that will provide high approach and departure angles. In terms of aesthetics, the new design language will be implemented, so we may count on a lot of similarities with the new LX, especially at the front.
Interior
Naturally, this redesign will also bring a completely new interior. The current model may feature excellent build quality but it would certainly use more modern aesthetics. Therefore, we expect to see a completely new dashboard design, with new aesthetics and nicer materials. Furthermore, we also count on new tech features, such as bigger infotainment screen, digital instrument cluster and many more.
Considering that exterior dimensions are about to remain the same, we presume that the amount of passenger and cargo rooms will remain pretty similar to the outgoing model. Therefore, we expect to see a couple of spacious and comfortable rows of seats, while the third row will probably be very tight, just like the cargo area, which won’t be generous with space at all.
2024 Lexus GX Engine
The powertrain department will be one of the most interesting aspects of the upcoming redesign. The good-old 4.6-liter V8 engine will be dropped and the replacement will come in the form of a hybrid powertrain. Most likely, the powertrain will be shared with the new Lexus RX 500h, which will be based on a turbo-four engine. We don’t know too many details, but we know that the combined output will go around 367 horsepower.
The engine should come in pair with an 8-speed automatic transmission and, as we already mentioned, a four-wheel-drive system will be standard. Besides the hybrid version, there is also a chance to see a model with a gasoline engine in some markets. That one would probably feature the company’s new turbo-four unit.
2024 Lexus GX Release Date and Price
